Dr. Huanming Yang is a globally recognized leader in genetic and genomic research. He founded BGI, the largest genomics organizations in the world presently, in 1999. Dr. Yang and his collaborators at BGI have made significant contributions to the International Human Genome Project, the International Human HapMap project and the 1000 Genomes Project. In conjunction with its research projects, BGI has established its technical platforms based on large-scale genome sequencing, efficient bioinformatics analyses, and innovative genetic healthcare initiatives.
In 2011 Professor Huanming Yang was named to the International Research Panel, a subcommittee of the US Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues and received the Chen Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement in Human Genetic and Genomic Research by HUGO. Previous awards and honors include Research Leader of the Year by Scientific American in 2002 and Award in Biology by the Third World Academy of Sciences in 2006.
Dr. Yang earned his Ph.D. from Copenhagen University, and received his postdoctoral training in France and the US. He is a former Professor & Director at the Human Genome Center, Institute of Genetics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his research has been published in numerous peer reviewed scientific journals, including Science, Nature, Nature Genetics, and Nature Biotechnology.
